This is a 2013 Spring harvested tea from Ku Zhu mountain area of Jinggu county (Simao).  The tea received a heavy smoke aroma during the kill green process as wood was used to heat the wok and the space was not well ventilated.   After several years of storage as loose leaf mao cha the tea has aged and the smokiness has faded to a pleasant level.  If you like a smoky pu-erh tea, then this one might be for you!

The brewed tea soup is orange-red, the aroma is that of smoke, mushroom soup, and fruit.  There is a sweetness to the tea that is not at all at odds with the smoky character and reminds one a bit of meat or grilled zuchini.   There is some astringency in the tea that can be moderated by avoiding long steeps in the first 5 or 6 steeps.

Any interesting tea for those who want to experience something different or for those who like smoky pu-erhs!

Smoke 'em If You Got 'em

"Good gravy this sucker is smoky! If you're curious what a good smoky tea is like, this is the tea for you. If normal smokiness in pu-erh is a hot dog, this is a hickory smoked ribeye at a swanky steakhouse. If you need a vegan equivalent, sorry, I can't help you there. I can, however, recommend this tea if your idea of a good time is doing shots of liquid smoke. It's also pretty sweet. Really reminds me of a good BBQ sauce. I steeped this tea for a long time, too. A minute+ to start, mainly because I was brewing while working and not paying attention, but even so, there was no bitterness to speak of, so don't be afraid to push it real good like Salt n Peppa. Get some!"

Don't let the smokiness fool you...

"Spicy, camphor, woody, vegetable stock, complex, energizing and uplifting cha qi. I got this tea specifically to sip while roasting coffee, since it's smokey, it really does shine above the smoke that's generated while coffee is being roasted."
